Important and Exceptional Stoneware Pedestal Water Cooler with Incised and Blue Highlighted Fish and Floral Design, Stamped "THOMAS D. CHOLLAR / CORTLAND," circa 1844, highly ovoid cooler form with handles and octagonal spigot, attached to a narrow, flaring base. Front of cooler decorated with a large, incised floral design highlighted in cobalt, along with a large and highly-detailed incised fish below. Fish painted in cobalt and decorated with numerous hand-punched scales. Handles with faux screw heads at terminals and also highlighted in cobalt. Spigot covered in cobalt. Cooler measures approximately five gallons. Likely one of the finest examples of Cortland stoneware known, this water cooler was made at the pottery of merchant Thomas D. Chollar, who at the same time owned another pottery only three miles away in Homer. Outstanding form and phenomenal decoration. Lines around base. Tiny hole in side of cooler. Faint lines here and there. Some small rim chips. Height 17 1/4".
