Exceedingly Rare and Important Folk Art Stoneware Jar with Incised Man Decoration and the Slogan, "I have shit my trowsers but that['s] nothing." Incised under figure "Bill Remey". Manhattan, NY origin, circa 1799-1801. William Remmey is a member of the well-known Remmey family potters and probably the brother, uncle or cousin of John Remmey III and Henry Remmey, Sr. He is listed in the New York city directories from 1799 to 1801 as a stoneware potter living on Upper Reed Street. While Remmey's inscribed name may be a signature, this jar was probably made by another Manhattan potter to depict Bill Remmey and an unfortunate but comical episode in his life. H 10".
