Exceptional Carved and Painted Whirligig of a Hatted Gentleman, American, 19th century, in the form of a suited man with top hat and mustache, raising a pennant with propeller end. Whirligig retains its original polychrome-painted and alligatored surface, the pennant painted red, white, and blue, and figure featuring a green jacket, dark hat and pants, and red boots. A wonderful folk art carving with a pleasing alligatored finish. Provenance: Found at a yard sale in New Jersey approximately twenty years ago. Several paddles missing from propeller. One arm slightly loose. Other typical wear. H (of whirligig itself) 17 3/4" ; H (including later turned and painted stand) 26 1/4".
