Carved and Painted Wooden Sculpture of an Eagle with 34-Star American Flag, attributed to George Stapf (1862-1951), Harrisburg and Lancaster, PA, late 19th or early 20th century, heavily-carved sculpture in the form a spread-winged eagle with open mouth and well-detailed feathering talons, the eagle's head draped around a carved waving American flag with 34 individually-carved and applied stars. A bold and highly-decorative folk sculpture by one of Pennsylvania's premier carvers of the form. Provenance: Purchased from a Virginia antiques dealer during the 1960's. Eagle in possibly-original gold-painted surface, with original red highlights to face. Flag with worn 20th century repaint over some original paint. Restoration to one claw. Loss to tip of flagpole. Wingspan 40".
