Rare Large Sized 9 Gallon Early Redware Jar

Back to New York, New Jersey & New England Stoneware

Item #XRJ01

Description:

This redware jar measures 20" tall and is stamped on its front with the number 12. Although the 12 capacity mark was more than likely used to indicate a 12 gallon size, this jar holds just about 9 gallons. The handles are primitive and open, and the shape is ovoid. It also has a tall collar, an early Hagerstown, Maryland and Winchester, Virginia characteristic. Although the jar has these Shenandoah Valley traits, the inside is covered with a brown colored glaze, typical of pottery made south of Virginia, which is where we suspect this piece was made. It is early, probably made in the first or second quarter of the 19th century, and certainly no later than 1850. Our attribution is to the southern United States, south of Virginia.

Regardless of where this redware jar was made, it is an incredibly large size piece, particularly for American redware, has an outstanding, early shape and is early. All of this combines to make this jar an outstanding example of early United States redware.

The black color is not a manganese glaze, but black paint that appears to be original to the piece.

Size:

20" tall.

Condition:

A few base and rim chips, normal for this size piece. A small rim chip has been reglued.
