Monumental 6 Gal. Stoneware Jar w/ Elaborate and Folky Decoration, Origin Unknown

Back to New York, New Jersey & New England Stoneware

Item #XJ02

Description:

This large, approximately six gallon stoneware jar is decorated on the front with a folky and highly unusual hanging flower surrounded by leafy swags and dots. The dots on either side of the hanging flower appear to be daisy-like flower heads, while the dots above the hanging flower seem to form a horizontal daisy with a stem. The decoration is topped off with an unusual line formed by a series of arches. The back of the jar is also decorated with a pair of leafy swags, and the handles, which are wide and heavily arched, are decorated with dashes. The form is attractive, with a wide mouth, a narrow base, and several incised lines around the collar. It is quite similar in shape and decoration to early Bell products of Winchester and Strasburg, VA, though the form of the ears and exact decoration are not seen on signed examples of their work. The decoration, including that found on the handles, is also similar to the work of John and James Miller of Strasburg, VA, circa 1830, though it was probably not made at their pottery. This is a very unusual piece, and we are unsure of its origin. It was probably made in Virginia, in the Shenandoah Valley or possibly in the central/eastern area of the state. It may have even been made elsewhere in the Mid-Atlantic region or Ohio. Its form and decoration date it to around 1830-50. Regardless of maker, this jar is a monumental, well-decorated example of American stoneware folk art.
