This highly unusual, three gallon stoneware water cooler has a pedestal fixed to the base to allow a mug or other vessel to fit under the cooler's spigot. This is a very unusual treatment found on only a handful of known stoneware coolers. Most such coolers were specially produced, elaborately decorated pieces made in New York or Western Pennsylvania. The front of this cooler is heavily decorated with a series of fuschia vines, characteristic of early Greensboro or Beaver, PA, stoneware. The decoration is very bright. The handle terminals and spigot are highlighted in cobalt as well. The cooler itself is ovoid in shape, with extruded handles, and heavy incising at the rim and shoulder. The form (excluding the base) looks very similar to jars stamped "HAMILTON & CO./ GREENSBORO," and made by William Leet Hamilton, circa 1855. The pedestal is hollow on the inside and tapers upward to a flat bottom just below the spigot. It has a rounded foot at the base. The ovoid shape, lavish decoration, and atypical pedestal base, give this cooler a very stately appearance. It would make an excellent, stand-alone display piece in any collection. |

Excellent Condition. Large chip off base. Another smaller chip off base, likely to be a stacker mark. Y-shaped line in the glaze only, covering two inches of front. A few glazed over stone pings. |
