Exceptional Lead and Manganese Glazed Redware Pitcher, Signed "WINCHESTER POTTERIES VA"

Back to Virginia Stoneware

Item #WNXP01

Description:

This small-sized, approximately one-quart redware pitcher was made circa 1930, at the Round Hill Pottery near Winchester, Virginia. One of two primary operators of the pottery was Thedy Fleet, a potter, who along with his father, Lorenzo, had worked decades earlier for the Eberlys in Strasburg. Most examples of Winchester Potteries redware are decorative pieces very different in style from what was previously produced in the Shenandoah Valley. Interestingly, however, this pitcher has a strong Strasburg influence, attesting to Fleet's early training with the Eberlys.

The pitcher has a lead slip-washed surface with splashed manganese and clear lead overglaze, a treatment popular among the Bells and Eberlys during the 1890's. The form of the vessel, with its straight sides and short collar, is much like the tankards and creamers previously produced in Strasburg. In addition, the pitcher's handle is finished with a triangular terminal, a decorative technique often employed by Fleet's father at Anthony Baecher's Winchester pottery circa 1875. z This is one of the finest examples of Winchester Potteries redware we have seen, and likely one of the last pieces of Shenandoah Valley redware thrown and glazed in the old style.
