Description:

Rare Shenandoah Valley redware flowerpot, signed on the underside,

BAECHER
WINCHESTER, VA.

This flowerpot features a lead and manganese glaze (over slip wash), and was made circa 1880-89 at the Anthony Baecher Pottery in Winchester, Virginia. It exhibits a crimped rim, tapered body, pair of incised lines at the midsection and vibrant orange and brown coloration.

This particular flowerpot has significant documentation; it is pictured in both Wiltshire's Folk Pottery of the Shenandoah Valley (p. 116) and Comstock's The Pottery of the Shenandoah Valley Region (p. 178, figure 4.276). Very clean glaze and stamp.


Size:

7" tall.

Condition:

Condition is excellent. Some minor roughness to rim. One crimp is worn down, and a few others have some wear. Glaze is terrific, with absolutely no exfoliation.
