Item #VXVJ01 |

| Description: |
This stoneware jar is made of a reddish clay and has an unusual matte finish, suggesting it may not have been glazed with salt, or any other type of coating. It was made by potter, Jessee Vestal in 1864, along the Great Wagon Road of VA. It bears Vestal's name in a large cursive script around the circumference of the jar:
The date "1864" may be relevant to the Civil War. The jar has an elegant ovoid form with flaring collar, and measures only about one-half of a gallon. Jessee Vestal was a member of the prolific Vestal family of potter; he was the father of James Vestal, and the son of Thomas Vestal. A rare piece of incised Virginia stoneware. |
