Extremely Rare Earthenware Canning Jar, "Carver & Wightman / Edinburg"

Back to Virginia Stoneware

Item #VXRJ01

Description:

This very striking, orange-glazed Virginia redware canning jar is impressed with the maker's mark,

CARVER & WIGHTMAN
EDINBURG
Va.

See Comstock, fig. 7.24 (page 386) for a similar example. As Comstock writes, this form, "interestingly, has no known counterpart in Valley production;" it was not produced at any other pottery in Shenandoah Valley and is very rare in and of itself. The addition of the very rare "Carver & Wightman" potter's mark makes this piece an exceptional and museum quality example of Valley pottery. The tall, slender form is well-executed and attractive, as is the lead glaze, which produces a beautiful, even, bright orange effect. A few green dots can be seen in the orange, as well, indicating the presence of copper in the glaze. (The glaze remains exceptionally intact, with no flaking or exfoliation at all.) The rim construction is outstanding, with an inner rim rising above a wide-mouthed outer rim in an unusual fashion. This jar was made 1850-65.

Size:

Inside height: 7 ¼".
Across bottom: 4 ¼".

Condition:

Rim and base chips, as seen in the photos. What appear as lightly-colored hairlines in the photographs are actually variations in the glaze, caused in the making. An old, tight line extending halfway across the bottom and a little over halfway up the side. Very sound and stable.

Simply an outstanding piece!!
