Unusual 3 Qt. Blue Decorated Stoneware Pitcher, Central VA Origin |

Item #VXP03 |
|||
| Description: |
This 3 qt. stoneware pitcher was probably made in Central Virginia, circa 1830-1860. The color of the clay and cobalt is consistent with pieces made at the Lowndes pottery of Petersburg and in the James River area; the decoration on the rim is similar to the work of the Lowndes pottery as well. The front is decorated with a wavy line, ended with a single flower head. The flower is flanked by wing-shaped leaves, and has an additional fern-shaped leaf in front of it. (The wavy line and fern-shaped leaf are very light and difficult to see.) This pitcher is squat and heavy, with thickly-thrown walls. The spout is crudely pinched, and the rim flares out with a pronounced flange at the top. |
