1 Gallon Decorated Jar, Signed "H. Lowndes Maker / Petersburg Va"

Back to Virginia Stoneware

Item #VXLJ03

Description:

This 1 gallon ovoid jar is signed through the use of a slip cup,

H. Lowndes Maker
Petersburg Va

It was made at the Henry Lowndes pottery of Petersburg, Va, circa 1835. The script is a desirable dark blue, and was laid on thick with the slip cup. As you can see in the pictures provided, some of the "u" as well as the "r" and "g" in "Petersburg" did not take in the firing. The reverse is decorated with an attractive five-leafed plant, done in the Lowndes style. In addition, cobalt has been applied to the handle terminals in narrow, pointed dabs that resemble the leaves used in this pottery's decorative motifs. The decoration and signature are particularly attractive on a jar of this small size. Signed Lowndes jars of one gallon size are very rare; most signatures seem to have been relegated to pieces of larger capacities. This crock also features large handles that are wide and deep, and almost square off at the sides. Overall, an impressive example of signed Petersburg pottery.

Size:

9 ¾" tall.

Condition:

Very large chip at base. One shallow glazed-over rim chip done in making. Discolored glaze lines on bottom, which need to be held at the right angle to be seen. A few very short glaze lines in rim, probably occurred when fired.
