Item #VXLJ01 |

| Description: |
The form and decoration of this ovoid 1 gallon jar are consistent with products of the Lowndes pottery of Petersburg, VA, circa 1805-55. It is both brush and slip cup decorated with cobalt, featuring a stemmed plant, tipped with five clover-like leaves or flowers, on the front; variants of this decoration have been found on numerous examples accompanied by the signature "H. Lowndes/ Manufactor [or Maker]/ Petersburg, Va" in cobalt script. A slip-trailed, looped line decorates the collar on the front and back, and cobalt has also been applied to the handle terminals. This is a classic example of highly decorated Lowndes pottery. |
