Three-Gallon Ovoid James River Stoneware Jar |

Item #VXJ13 |
|||
| Description: |
This three gallon ovoid stoneware jar was made in the James River area of Virginia, circa 1825 to 1850. It is decorated on one side with a motif of four connected flower petals or leaves, and on the reverse with a similar decoration consisting of three leaves connected to a central stem. (The leaf decoration on the reverse is similar to those found on later Ducey products from Petersburg, VA.) The handles are large rounded types, with vibrant cobalt decoration covering their tops and terminals. This is a skillfully thrown pot, with a nicely formed rim and several lines of incising directly below it. Furthermore, the jar appears thinner-walled than most other James River pieces we have seen. A very nice example of stoneware from this area, with unusually vivid cobalt decoration. |
