Rare 2 Gal. Southern Virginia Ovoid Jar |
||||
Back to Virginia Stoneware |
Item #VXJ06 |
|||
| Description: |
This great looking stoneware storage jar was made somewhere in southern Virginia; it has characteristics of pieces produced in both Rockbridge County and the James River basin area. The ovoid, small-mouthed form and handles placed just below the rim give this piece a very striking visual appeal. The tall, rolled collar flares out dramatically, as well. The cobalt blue stylized floral decoration on the front is bright and the gray-blue contrast is outstanding; the back is decorated with a blue 2, indicating the gallon capacity. This is an exceptionally formed and decorated, early piece of Virginia pottery. It was made c1840. Please see Comstock pp.316-17 for similar examples. |
