Lidded Stoneware Jar, Probably James River, Virginia

Back to Virginia Stoneware

Item #VXJ01

Description:

This stoneware jar is decorated with a stylized tulip design on the front and retains its original lid, the knob of which is a nicely formed finial. It is unusually heavy and the clay exhibits a reddish hue in areas. Base on the decoration and clay body, this piece was most probably made in the James River area of Southeastern Virginia. The fact that it retains the lid is highly unusual for 19th century stoneware. The jar is impressed on the shoulder with a 2-gallon capacity mark and was made c1850. Its attractive shape resembles that of a cookie jar.

Size:

11 ¾" tall.

Condition:

Near mint. One very small, very shallow rim chip; otherwise, original condition.
