Blue Decorated ½ Gal. Stoneware Jar, Signed "D.H. HENKEL"
(Stonyman, Virginia)

Back to Virginia Stoneware

Item #VXHJ02

Description:

This exceptional, half gallon stoneware jar is decorated around its mid-section with a series of cobalt blue swags, and is stamped on the collar,

D. H. HENKEL

It was produced at the Stonyman Pottery located in Blossersville, Virginia, near Luray, sometime between 1870 and 1884. Very few examples produced by this rare maker were blue decorated. Henkel, not a potter himself, employed various local Valley potters during his tenure, including Theophilus Grim and Samuel Coffman. Interestingly, the mark was impressed on the rim, rather than the body of the jar.

This is an exceptional example from a very desirable Shenandoah Valley maker.

Size:

Approx. 8 7/8" tall.

Condition:

Unusually excellent condition for this pottery. Some small rim nicks and a few rim chips. Otherwise, original condition.
