Small-Sized, Manganese Decorated Stoneware Jar w/ Incised Date on Underside, attrib. G.N. Fulton, Allegheny Co., VA

Back to Virginia Stoneware

Item #VXFJ04

Description:

This small-sized, semi-ovoid Virginia stoneware jar appears to hold about one-half of a gallon, and is decorated around with eight vertical, wavy lines of manganese. The underside of the jar bears the incised date,

Nov 11th 1879.

The heavy manganese decoration on this piece, as well as the quality of the clay, suggest that it was made by G.N. Fulton of Allegheny County, Virginia. Dated stoneware by Fulton is known, but is quite rare. The date on this example is consistent with Fulton's period of potting activity in Allegheny County. (Another dated Fulton piece, a miniature straight-sided jar, is dated 1881, only two years after this jar was made. )

In addition, the line decoration on this example, as well as its small size, are uncommon for Fulton. These details, along with the fact that the jar contains an inscribed date, suggest it may have been a specially produced item.

A unique piece of manganese-decorated, Shenandoah Valley stoneware.

Size:

6" tall.

Condition:

Excellent condition. Very thin (barely visible) line extends 3/4" inch down rim, probably occurred in the making.
