Rare G.N. FULTON, Alleghany Co., VA Cobalt Decorated Jar |

Item #VXFJ01 |

| Description: |
This 1 gallon stoneware jar is decorated on the front with a cobalt floral design, as well as the initials, G N F. These are, of course, the initials of Alleghany County, Virginia, potter George N. Fulton. Fulton potted from 1867 to 1880. Although his stoneware is quite rare in and of itself, Fulton seems to have used manganese (brown) to decorate his stoneware far more than he used cobalt. The contrast of the blue and gray on this jar is excellent and the blue is very bright. Two pairs of incised lines encircle the jar on the upper portion, near the rim. An unusual ribbing effect is also created by three, thick, lightly applied bands that run around the center area of the piece. This a beautiful, signed piece of Southern folk art. |
