| Description: |
Stoneware and redware made at the Carver and Wightman pottery in Edinburg, Virginia, is extremely rare and sought after, especially by collectors of Shenandoah Valley pottery. This large crock, although not marked, was definitely made there. The absence of any Carver & Wightman crocks from Comstock's The Pottery of the Shenandoah Valley Region attests to the rarity of this form. This very large crock is impressed with an unusual 6 gallon capacity mark. It is decorated front and back with 4 classic, bright cobalt blue Carver & Wightman leafy flowers. The extruded handles are large and thick and are decorated at the ends. The rim is very unusual; it flares outward, is very thick and unusually tall. The very deep, incised treatment beneath the rim is also quite unusual and appealing. This is an outstanding piece of Shenandoah Valley pottery and is a very visually impressive stoneware vessel. |
