Stoneware Jug with Bird and Branch Decoration, Signed "J. NORTON & CO" |
||||
Back to New York, New Jersey & New England Stoneware |
Item #VTNG03 |
|||
| Description: |
This 2 gallon, stoneware jug is decorated with a slip-trailed, parrot-like bird on a stylized tree branch. It is stamped below the spout
BENNINGTON, VT 2 and was made at the Julius Norton pottery in Bennington, Vermont, circa 1850. The J. NORTON & CO maker's mark on this jug is a bit rarer and earlier than the J & E NORTON mark. The decoration is very bright and is striking in appearance against the light clay background. Overall, a nice example of popular Norton / Bennington stoneware. |
