Rare Decorated Stoneware Harvest Jug, Lewis Manning Haun,
Greene County, TN

Back to Virginia Stoneware

Item #TNG01

Description:

This stoneware harvest jug was made circa 1860 by the Greene County, Tennessee, potter, Lewis Manning Haun. L.M. Haun married into the Harmon family of potters, and his brother, C.A. Haun, was a more-prominent Greene County earthenware potter, who was hanged by the Confederates. This jug is decorated around the top portion with pointed cobalt swags, with additional cobalt application to the spouts and two points where a rainbow handle attached over the top of the jug. (The handle has since broken off.) The jug bears the cobalt inscription

E.M. Moore
by L.M.H.
1878

The "E.M. Moore" mentioned in the inscription is undoubtedly the person the jug was made for. The initials "L.M.H.," which stand for Lewis Manning Haun, have been found on other pieces that have been attributed to this obscure potter; the same can be said of the date, 1878. An interesting feature of this jug, also a characteristic of other L.M. Haun pieces, is the stamped decoration at the handle terminals. A single stamp, possibly a stylized leaf, has been impressed several times at these points.

Outstanding form and unusual cobalt writing. A very folky example of Southern stoneware.

Size:

8 ¾" tall, to tallest spout.
