| Description: |
This 3 gallon, blue-decorated stoneware churn was probably made in Strasburg, VA, circa 1880. It is decorated on the front and back with bright cobalt flowers set against a light clay background, which was coated in slip before being salt-glazed. The decoration and usage of a white slip wash suggests that this piece was made by Solomon Bell. However, the 3 gallon capacity mark stamped under one handle is similar to, but not identical to those used by Solomon or Samuel Bell and Sons. The churn was, therefore, likely made by a potter trained or influenced by the Bells at another Strasburg pottery. The churn form, though common among the work of many potteries in the East, was rarely produced in Strasburg. |
