Unusual Blue Decorated Strasburg Stoneware Churn

Back to Virginia Stoneware

Item #SXH01

Description:

This 3 gallon, blue-decorated stoneware churn was probably made in Strasburg, VA, circa 1880. It is decorated on the front and back with bright cobalt flowers set against a light clay background, which was coated in slip before being salt-glazed. The decoration and usage of a white slip wash suggests that this piece was made by Solomon Bell. However, the 3 gallon capacity mark stamped under one handle is similar to, but not identical to those used by Solomon or Samuel Bell and Sons. The churn was, therefore, likely made by a potter trained or influenced by the Bells at another Strasburg pottery. The churn form, though common among the work of many potteries in the East, was rarely produced in Strasburg.

Size:

15 ¼" tall.
