| Description: |
This folky redware flower pot was made in Strasburg, VA, most probably at the Bell pottery, though possibly at the Eberly pottery. It is a classic example of the Shenandoah Valley flowerpot form, in the popular three-colored glaze that both potteries favored. The effect of the glaze is achieved through the use of copper and manganese splashed over a lead base. The thick rim is deeply scored in two parallel rows on the outer rim and in one row on the inner rim. The attached saucer is also deeply scored at the top of its rim. An original drain hole is situated on the lower side of the pot, just above the saucer. This is a very attractive piece of Valley folk pottery. |
