| Description: |
This extremely rare and important redware flower vase is washed over in white slip and adorned with classic Solomon Bell bright copper oxide decoration on the front and back. The lion's head handles are exceptional and surviving pieces with this treatment are minimal. These handles are very folky, with well-detailed features, such as large manes and protruding tongues. The inside top of the rim is deeply scored. The outside of the rim is also deeply scored, twice, in two layers, separated by a deeply incised line. The base is expertly shaped and noticeably protrudes from the bottom of the vase. Large Shenandoah Valley redware pieces are very difficult to find. This is one of the largest sized redware vessels produced in the Shenandoah Valley. See Wiltshire, p. 43 for a similar example. Attributed to Solomon Bell, Strasburg, Virginia, Mid Nineteenth Century. |
