Item #SOBP02 |

| Description: |
This molded redware pitcher depicts a hunt scene with dogs attacking a boar and deer on either side. Surrounding the scene are trees, flowers, and a pattern of dots. The pitcher is glazed in shades of manganese, darker in some places and lighter in others, giving it an attractive mottled appearance. The handle is molded and vine-like. This type of molded pitcher was produced by John Bell, Solomon Bell, and later by Samuel Bell’s sons. It resembles most closely the work of Solomon Bell; however, his hunt scene pitchers depict a boar facing the right, and this example features a boar facing the left, suggesting that a different mold may have been used. John Bell’s hunt scene pitchers have the boar facing the left, making this pitcher quite possibly one of his products. See Comstock p. 122, fig. 4.117, for a hunt scene pitcher by John Bell. Fig’s. 5.62-4 on p. 220 show a series of manganese-glazed hunt scene pitchers by Solomon Bell, and fig. 5.141 on p. 245 shows a multi-glazed hunt scene pitcher attributed to S. BELL & SONS with a very similar handle to the example offered here. |
