Very Rare ½ Gallon Stoneware Pitcher, SOLOMON BELL, STRASBURG

Back to Virginia Stoneware

Item #SOBP01

Description:

Signed Shenandoah Valley pitchers have always been very difficult to find. In recent years, only a small number have been offered for sale and as time goes on, these utilitarian wares will become harder and harder to find. This pitcher is an especially desirable, small, half gallon size. It is decorated around the entire collar and shoulder with very typical Bell pottery decoration, with a full flower hanging down the front. The handle is also decorated, not only at the ends, but over the entire handle, an extra feature not usually seen on stoneware pitchers. The impressed maker's mark is deeply impressed on the shoulder, as follows:

SOLOMON BELL
STRASBURG
Va.

This is an exceptionally rare and highly desirable example of Shenandoah Valley stoneware.

Size:

9" tall.

Condition:

Excellent, nearly original condition. 1 chip on the spout and 1 inside-the-rim chip. A chip on the side that looks like a kiln pop-out, done in the making.
