This extremely folky, stoneware, flared-rim storage jar is impressed, SOLOMON BELL STRASBURG VA. It is decorated around the top with expertly-done manganese flowers. Most Solomon Bell stoneware was cobalt decorated, and not nearly as many manganese-decorated examples have survived. This jar is very striking and displays very well! It was made at one of the most proficient Shenandoah Valley potteries, circa 1860. This is a well-made, very attractive example of Southern folk art.
