Early SOLOMON BELL Strasburg, VA. Small-Sized Jar

Back to Virginia Stoneware

Item #SOBJ01

Description:

Outstanding, small-sized stoneware storage jar, with two bright cobalt blue full flowers. Impressed,

SOLOMON BELL
STRASBURG
Va.

The jar measures between ½ gallon and 3 quarts. Very folky form and decoration. Although salt-glazed, this piece has a great, white coloration to the body that was produced using a white slip wash. The slip was created using white earthenware clay with a high kaolin content and liquid glaze materials, such as lead or copper. The jar was thrown, dipped in the slip wash, then allowed to dry. After drying, the decoration/glaze were applied, and the piece was fired. See Comstock, page 214, for more information on Solomon Bell's use of this technique.

This is an unusual, early example of Solomon Bell's work. It was produced c1850.

Size:

8 ½" tall.

Condition:

Original, mint condition, except for one tiny, very shallow rim nick.
