1 Gal. W.H. LEHEW / Strasburg Stoneware Pitcher, As Is

Back to Virginia Stoneware

Item #SLP02

Description:

This 1 gallon Shenandoah Valley stoneware pitcher is marked at the base of the handle,

1
W.H. LEHEW & CO.
STRASBURG VA.

(This is an unusual location for a Valley pitcher to be signed, as most were stamped on the collar or front.) This example features Lehew's signature tall, slender form. A bright blue tulip decorates the front and cobalt dabs surround the handle terminals. Deeply scored grooves run vertically down from the spout to separate it from the neck of vessel, a folky effect found on Lehew's work. Good gray and blue contrast. This is a nice example of the ever-desirable signed Valley pitcher.

Size:

10 ¾" tall.

Condition:

Handle missing. Chip off spout and chip off rim above handle terminal. A few thin lines, but pitcher rings true.
