Outstanding 2 Gallon "W.H. LEHEW & Co." Strasburg Pitcher

Back to Virginia Stoneware

Item #SLP01

Description:

This pitcher was made in Strasburg, VA., circa 1865 at the William H. Lehew Pottery. It bears both a 2 gallon capacity mark and one of Lehew's earlier, scarcer marks with backwards "S"'s, reading,

W.H. LEHEW & CO.
STRASBURG, VA.

(Both the capacity & maker's marks are encircled with "saw tooth" borders.) It is outstandingly decorated with 4 hanging flowers and a series of detailed swags circling the body. The collar is decorated with swags. There is also striping along the spout itself and blue at the handle terminals. An unbelievably decorated Strasburg pitcher, with excellent contrast and a rare large size. Also of note is the excellent form of the piece--the tall, narrow collar, footed base and the way the body bellies out just below the collar. It would be difficult to find a Valley pitcher of higher aesthetic value than this.

Size:

13 ¾" tall. About 7 ½" at the base.

Condition:

Collar is mint. Chips at base, some of which are glazed over and occurred in the making. A very thin, vertical line (looks like a glaze line) that runs near the left of the handle; it is more visible on the inside, and clearly occurred in the making. Lastly, some lines on the underside, one of which branches out and travels a short way up onto the body.
