1 ½ Gal. Decorated Crock Signed W.H. LEHEW & CO / STRASBURG VA

Back to Virginia Stoneware

Item #SLJ01

Description:

This straight-sided stoneware crock is decorated with five groups of cobalt swags and is marked

1 ½
W.H. LEHEW & CO.
STRASBURG VA

It is stamped with the second maker's mark of the William H. Lehew pottery, in which the S's in Strasburg are reversed, and was made circa 1870. This is a size not easily found in Valley stoneware, and the bright cobalt, characteristic of pieces bearing Lehew's second mark, is more attractive in color than most other Strasburg pieces.

Size:

11 ½" tall.

Condition:

Excellent condition. Light crazing on bottom, one line of which extends up side about 2", probably done in making. Very small base chips and small rim chips.
