| Description: |
This large stoneware pitcher is stamped on the front with the two-gallon capacity mark used at the Jeremiah Keister Pottery of Strasburg, VA, circa 1870. The pitcher is decorated with groups of swags interspersed with three large flowers around the midsection, as well as additional groups of swags around the collar. Excellent coloration for a Strasburg piece. The vessel is skillfully formed with a heavy molded ridge where the collar meets the body, along with additional thrown and incised detail to the collar. This example has several lines of incising at the rim similar to earlier pitchers made by Jeremiah's father, Adam. A rare and attractive piece of Shenandoah Valley stoneware. Although unsigned, positively attributable to Jeremiah Keister's shop. |
