Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Milkpan Signed,
J. KEISTER & CO. / STRASBURG, VA.

Back to Virginia Stoneware

Item #SKB01

Description:

This stoneware milkpan is decorated with three groups of bright cobalt swags on the front and back, and is stamped,

1

J. KEISTER & CO.
STRASBURG, VA.

It was made at the Jeremiah Keister pottery of Strasburg, VA, circa . It bears the vibrant, bright blue / light gray color contrast and stylized swags characteristic of J. Keister's stoneware. This milkpan was expertly thrown, with deeply flaring sides, thick pocket-like handles, and a pronounced band of incising below the rim. Pan or bowl shaped forms from Strasburg are scarce and desirable. This example has a pouring spout, which is unusual for Strasburg products. (Most have a continuous, circular rim.) In terms of style, Keister pottery often diverges from what was typically produced in Strasburg; it is often seen as of higher quality than that of other local makers. Pieces stamped with any of the Keisters' marks remain some of the most desirable of Strasburg stoneware.

Size:

4 3/4" tall. 11" wide at top. 6 7/8" wide at base.

Condition:

A few tiny chips on rim, one on spout. A section of in-the-making lines at base and on underside; these clearly occurred in making as a result of stones in the clay and are extremely stable.

Price:

$1795
