Slip and Manganese Glazed Redware Flowerpot, signed S. BELL & SON/ STRASBURG |

Back to Virginia Stoneware |
Item #SBRF01 |

| Description: |
This flowerpot is of a desirable round-sided form with attached saucher. It was coated with a white slip and decorated in manganese with a variant of the swags popular among the Bells. The manganese appears glossy against the matte white background; the inner swags are a light ochre brown and the outer swags are a darker, almost olive color. Several incised lines serve as a boundary point from which the decoration extends. Decorated on the front and back. Most redware attributable to S. BELL & SON is of the multi-glazed variety, with lead, manganese, and copper glazes; this is a somewhat more unusual slip and manganese glazed piece, and may have been made before the great rise of multi-glazed products. While stoneware marked S. BELL & SON is relatively easy to find, redware signed by this potting firm is very unusual; it remains some of the most difficult of all Bell redware to find with a maker's mark. |
