| Description: |
This massive, ten-gallon stoneware storage crock is stamped below the rim with a large 10 gallon capacity mark known to have been used at the pottery of Samuel Bell & Sons of Strasburg, VA. The rim is decorated on the front and back with opposing upward sweeping and downward curving swags of cobalt, interspersed with hanging flowers. Large cobalt script "10" 's run longitudinally under each handle to further indicate the capacity of the crock. The crock is expertly thrown for being such a large and heavy piece, with a well-tooled rim and collar area, and incising at the shoulder. Lug, cobalt-dabbed handles are applied to the sides. This crock surfaced just recently, and is nearly identical to an example pictured in Comstock, on p. 243. An outstanding Bell / Strasburg piece. One of only a few known. |
