Very Rare Samuel Bell Jar c1840 |
||||
Back to Virginia Stoneware |
Item #SABJ01 |
|||
| Description: |
Profusely decorated over more than half of front and back with cobalt blue flowers and vines. The handles are molded rather than merely applied. This storage jar is impressed with the rare mark, "(S.) Bell / 1 ½" in small capital letters under one of the ears. The potter's mark was impressed on the side of this jar before the handles were attached and the "S" part of the mark ended up under the handle. Although the "S" does not appear, this piece was definitely made c1840 at the Samuel Bell pottery. Also, it was likely made in Winchester, Virginia, rather than Strasburg. Although this jar is marked with a 1 ½ gallon capacity mark, it actually holds only 4 ¾ quarts, 1 ¼ quarts less than 1 ½ gallons. This is one of the earliest signed pieces of Shenandoah Valley pottery in existence. |
