Rare Emanuel Suter 2 Gallon Stoneware Jug |

Back to Virginia Stoneware |
Item #RCSG01 |
|||
| Description: |
This 2 gallon jug is decorated up the front with very folky, huge, bright cobalt flowers, in typical Emanuel Suter fashion. It is also stamped with his 2 gallon capacity mark (which is so distinctive, it acts as a maker's mark). The decoration is very striking and it is hard to get a feeling from the photos for how large these flowers are. See Comstock p.341 for similarly decorated examples; also see Kaufman's Heatwole & Suter Pottery. In addition to the pictures below is a photograph taken from figure 34 of Kaufman's book, showing the 2 gallon Suter capacity mark next to the "E. Suter" maker's mark. A great piece of American folk art. |

14" tall. |

Condition: |
|
The handle is missing, but judging by the clean way it came off, it may have been affixed loosely, when made. One small rim chip. Some very minor, short, thin lines that were almost certainly done in the making. Otherwise in as-made condition. |
