| Description: |
This is an impressive, hand-modeled redware dog seated on an oval base. It has a clear lead glaze with manganese sponging, resulting in a glossy reddish clay with attractive dark mottling. The detail in this example is remarkable. The upper body, head, and tail, of the dog are decorated with a series of dotted and dashed strokes of incising. A band of incised ovals serves as the dog's collar. A small basket hangs from his mouth. There is a stylized stamped flower behind the dog's front legs. The edge of the base is encircled with stamped ovals. Like many of these redware figures, it has a rattle inside. This seated dog was probably made at the Vickers Pottery of Chester County, PA, circa 1830 or later. Similar dogs attributed to the Vickers Pottery are pictured on page 22 of Arthur E. James' The Potters and Potteries of Chester County, Pennsylvania. Of particular note are the similarities between the face and eye details on the seated dogs pictured in James' book and those on the example offered here. The dog being offered here is fresh to the market. It was purchased in 1982 when Sotheby's held a two-day auction at the York, PA, Fairgrounds, selling "American Folk Art, Furniture, and Related Decorative Arts: The Collection of the Late Pauline Heilman, York, Pennsylvania." It still bears Heilman's original inventory sticker. It has not been offered for sale since its purchase in 1982. |
