| Description: |
This rare and vibrantly decorated, five gallon cream jar is stamped below the collar
YORK PA It was made at the Pfaltzgraff Pottery of York, PA, in the late nineteenth century. The front is decorated with a very large bird atop a detailed leaf. The bird is painted with folky details: an improportionately large head, pronounced bill, and paddle-like tail. The decoration is executed in brilliant cobalt blue, set against a light background, and covers nearly the entire front of this substantial five gallon vessel. The bird measures approximately nine inches in length, and the leaf measures about 8 1/2 inches. Above the bird's head is a "5" in cobalt script to indicate gallonage. Bird decorations are rare for Pfaltzgraff stoneware. This piece is exceptional due to the size of the decoration. Overall, a superior example of one of the most popular Pennsylvania maker's marks. |
