Very Rare Signed R.J. GRIER Stoneware Crock |

Item #PXGJ01 |

| Description: |
Ralph J. Grier purchased the Mt. Jordan Pottery in Chester County, Pennsylvania, in 1870 and operated it to his death in 1902. The Potters and Potteries of Chester County, Pennsylvania, by Arthur E. James, is the best work on the Mount Jordan Pottery. James indicates that pieces marked R. J. GRIER are rare and there are no signed examples illustrated in his book. Stoneware by this Chester County potter is highly collectible and this is only the second example with Grier's impressed mark that we have ever heard of. This crock is large, with a 3 gallon capacity mark under one ear and R. J. GRIER under the other. It is nicely decorated with 4 full flowers (2 on each side), blue at the handle ends, and dashes under the handles. |
