Ovoid Decorated 3 Gallon Jar, Philadelphia |
||||
Back to Pennsylvania Stoneware |
Item #PHXJ01 |
|||
| Description: |
This 3 gallon stoneware jar has a well-executed ovoid form, nice rim tooling, and extruded handles. It is stamped with a "3" on the rim, and features a leafy vine decoration on the front and back. In addition, cobalt swags decorate the top of the jar on the both sides, there is a wavy line under each handle, and cobalt at the handle terminals. This jar is similar to pieces made at the Richard C. Remmey pottery of Philadelphia, PA, circa 1870, though it bears a much different capacity mark than that used by Remmey. It is likely that this jar was made somewhere else in Philadelphia or Eastern Pennsylvania. |
