MANHATTAN-WELLS NEW-YORK
The size of this jug is also a difficult and highly desirable stoneware size to find. It measures only 9" high and holds less that ½ gallon (about 56 ounces). The potter's mark is generously highlighted with dark cobalt blue. There is lots of cobalt on top of the handle and at the handle ends, as well. The neck is decorated with a series of incised lines, typically found on early 19th century stoneware jugs. The base is also encircled with a tooled line. The handle is nicely molded. This is an outstanding and very rare example of early 19th century American stoneware. It was produced by one of the most famous and important stoneware potters, operating at the beginning of stoneware manufacture in this country. |

Excellent overall condition. There is some minor crazing under the glaze, one small base chip and one small nick on the body of the jug. Just superb condition for a jug as early as this one. |
