and was made at the pottery of Noah White and Son in Utica, New York, circa 1860. (The 4 gallon capacity mark is flanked by a wreath-like stamp.) The front of the churn is decorated in vibrant cobalt blue with a paddletail bird on a multi-leaved morning glory vine. The decoration features raised, slip-trailed elements, as well as cobalt filled areas applied by brush. The entire decoration is very large, covering much of the front and parts of the left and right sides, and measuring 9" tall and 14" on the diagonal.

The churn is fitted with handles at the sides, and an inner rim to hold a dasher guide. The interior is albany slip glazed.

A beautiful display piece of Upstate New York stoneware. It would be very difficult to find any piece of stoneware with such superior color.

Size:

15 ½" tall.

Condition:

Excellent condition. Expected wear from use to interior bottom and interior churn rim. Very small chip on reverse at base. (Small dot in photo above the dotted leaf is a small, glazed-over stone ping).
