| Description: |
A heavily slip-trailed and well detailed cobalt blue houseboat decorates the front of this large sized stoneware storage crock, impressed with the maker's mark,
HAVANA, N.Y. 4 The houseboat (with 5 windows, a door and 2 chimneys), sits on a body of water with stylized waves. Albert O. Whittemore operated the pottery from 1862 to 1893 and, according to William Ketchum's book, "was something of a legend in his own time, at least in Havana." He was originally a maker of beaver hats who came to upstate New York from New York City. The decoration on this crock is rare and extensive. This is an exceptional piece of early American folk art. |
