Very Rare C. Crolius PICKLES Jar

Description:

This exceedingly rare jar is stamped on the front with 6 lines, as follows: C. CROLIUS MANUFACTURER MANHATTAN-WELLS NEW-YORK PICKLES [very large] NEW-YORK The text is all washed over with cobalt blue, surrounded by a cobalt blue wreath. 2 cobalt blue swags on the back. This jar is small, measuring only 7 ¾" tall. The shape is very ovoid with a small bottom and a small mouth. There are 2 incised lines on the shoulder. This piece was made c1800-38.

7 ¾" tall.

Condition:

There are several cracks which extend down from the rim and cross the body of the jar. There are also multiple rim chips and one base chip. None of the damage touches the lettering. Despite this, C. Crolius stoneware (especially of this quality) does not become available very often. This piece, if perfect, would command a price several times this price.
