Back to New York, New Jersey & New England Stoneware

Item #NYRG01

Description:

This impressive, highly ovoid jug is stamped below the rim in bold letters

C. CROLIUS
NEW-YORK

It was made at the pottery of Clarkson Crolius, Jr. in Manhattan, New York, circa 1835 to 1849. The sides of the jug are each decorated in cobalt with a freehand star, and the front is brush-decorated with a floral design similar to the incised designs found on earlier Manhattan products. The handle terminals are also decorated with cobalt dabs. This is a superbly thrown stoneware jug that is squat in stature, with a tremendous bulge at the waist, heavy incising at the collar, and a deeply ribbed handle. A quality example of New York City stoneware by one of the country's most renowned potting families.

Condition:

Excellent condition. An in-the-making glaze line ascends up side about 4".
