Museum Quality 4 Gal. Early NY Incised Jar

Back to New York, New Jersey & New England Stoneware

Item #NYOJ01

Description:

Extremely rare 4 gallon jar with large incised floral decoration on the front and back, filled in with cobalt blue. Both lug handles also have large dabs of blue at the ends. This piece was made c1800, probably by Thomas Commeraws, the New York City potter of the late 18th and early 19th century. Large pieces made as early as this jar do not become available very often and are very difficult to find. The form of this pot is indicative of a well-skilled potter and the decoration is strikingly elaborate for a piece made as early as this one.
