Rare 1 Gallon Stoneware Jug Signed "COMMERAWS / STONEWARE"

Back to New York, New Jersey & New England Stoneware

Item #NYCG01

Description:

This 1 gallon, ovoid stoneware jug is stamped at the midsection

COMMERAWS
STONEWARE

(one of the various maker's marks used by Thomas Commeraw of Manhattan, New York, circa 1815; the words are also lightly filled with cobalt.) Above the signature is a hand-incised, cobalt-filled design, which is characteristic of Commeraw, but not found on all of his work. The jug has an elegant form typical of the early Manhattan potters, with a reeded neck and footed base.

Early Manhattan pottery has remained some of the most coveted of all American stoneware for decades. Stoneware of this age and locality was some of the first to ever be sought by this country's early collectors.

12 ¼" tall.

Condition:

Repaired handle. Crazing throughout, some of which can be felt with the fingers. Old flake to left of handle, and another small flake a few inches below the word "STONEWARE." In-the-making stone ping below the "S" in "STONEWARE." Large base chips.
